Epic. Earnest. Explosive. These are just some of the myriad
adjectives that describe the music of Canadian musical troupe Arcade Fire. The
group’s 2004 full-length debut on Merge, Funeral, was a critical
darling, and during their subsequent supporting tour, audiences fell completely
in love with the pure energy that came through in live performances. 2007’s
follow-up release, Neon Bible, won the Juno Award for Alternative Album
of the Year, and both albums were nominated for Grammys. Arcade Fire received
additional exposure in 2009 when their gorgeous and breathtaking anthem, “Wake
Up,” was featured in the trailer for the Spike Jonze-directed Where the Wild
Things Are, and again during the 2010 Super Bowl (for which all proceeds
were donated to the charity Partners in Health).
Apart from being brilliant musicians, founding band members Win Butler and Régine Chassagne have been vocal advocates for Partners in Health, and stepped up their efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti. The group’s much-anticipated third album is set to drop this year, and Butler told NME that the band was looking forward to debuting the new songs live at their festival stops this summer. For music fans seeking a near-spiritual, overwhelming live experience replete with sing-alongs and goosebumps, Arcade Fire is your band.
