Chicago’s Company of Thieves may claim their moniker pays a bit of tribute to the many
musical inspirations they’ve shared, and ultimately embezzled, but pick up a
copy of their debut album, 2009’s Ordinary Riches, and you’ll know their
eclectic pop tunes are as original as they come.
Genevieve Schatz leads the trio with a voice that scales from an easy, wistful croon to edgy angst, and lyrics that reflect the band’s cinematic perspective of the world.
Balancing its workload between Schatz, guitarist Marc Walloch and drummer Mike Ortiz, Company of Thieves finds inspiration in a variety of places, including the Victorian-era life and mannerisms of Oscar Wilde, whose name not only serves as a song title, but whose essay “The Soul of Man Under Socialism” gave the album its title.
