Though
Cut Copy seems bewildered to be thought of as a “veteran act,” the group, which
started out as songwriter/producer/DJ Dan Whitford’s solo project in 2001, has
accomplished veteran-quality feats in the past nine years, despite having
released only two full-length albums. Now with bassist/guitarist Tim Hoey and
drummer Mitchell Scott, Whitford released Bright
Like Neon Love in 2004, which helped draw major-label (and major fan)
attention—Universal’s Island Records picked up international distribution for
Cut Copy in 2006. 2008’s In Ghost Colours was the group’s true breakthrough, debuting at No. 1 in Australia. Pitchfork picked it as one of the
magazine’s top five albums of the year.
The band toured extensively in 2009 with fellow festival act Matt & Kim, and also released new music from Knightlife on their label, Cutters Records. Perhaps most importantly for fans of Cut Copy, the band announced on their MySpace that they had also been putting in work on a new album, meaning they’ll have new songs to perform at festival appearances across the globe this summer.
