Commonly
compared to Modest Mouse and Pavement, Cymbals Eat Guitars’ unpredictable songs
have won the approval of tastemakers ranging from The Village Voice to The New
York Times. Their rowdy, intense 2009 debut, Why There Are Mountains, received the Best New Music nod from Pitchfork, whose Matthew Perpetua said,
“What makes Why There Are Mountains more than just a nostalgic retread
is songwriter Joseph D'Agostino's preternatural skill for balancing pensive
meandering with moments of cathartic release, and the band's endearing and
unforced enthusiasm for rocking out.”
The song, “And the Hazy Sea” bridges a crazy amount of hooks with fluttering chimes and envious screams; “Indiana” effortlessly fuses Motown horns with Cold War Kids-like piano runs and “Tunguska” is soft enough for goosebumps, but kicks into an uptempo frenzy to take it from ballad to howling declaration.
