Though for many, last year’s Bitte Orca might have
been an introduction to experimental indie-rock group the Dirty Projectors, the
band has been lauded by fellow musicians for years. Formed by Dave Longstreth
after he released an album under his own name, the band has released 6
full-length recordings since 2003, and has performed on bills with indie heavyweights
and art-rock greats—like when they teamed up with David Byrne for a song on the
Dark was the Night compilation, which raised awareness and money for
HIV/Aids. At one point, the band even featured Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig
and Rostam Batmanglij.
With Bitte Orca, the Dirty Projectors are experiencing a breakthrough, thanks in part to their unique jam, “Stillness is the Move”. Longstreth and co. are still weaving bizarre and beautiful harmonies with innovative and occasionally unsettling music, but the music is much more accessible now, as indicated by Solange Knowles’ cover of “Stillness.” Musicians still adore the Dirty Projectors, but now legions of fans do, too.
