Freelance Whales are one of the top contenders for indie buzz band of 2010. This quintet of multi-instrumentalists from Queens crafts dramatic, vibrant and infectious songs with beautiful melodies, and lyrics ranging from heartbreaking to hopeful, heavy to humorous. Frontman Judah Dadone, who grew up in Israel, says the band’s name came from a diving incident he experienced as a kid.
Their folk-inspired pop, as heard on their debut LP, Weathervanes, re-releasing April 13 on Frenchkiss, has earned comparisons to Arcade Fire. SPIN called the band a must-see at this year’s South by Southwest, proclaiming, “This kitchen-sink collective builds from a heartbreaking quiver to a cinematic sprawl with a grace reminiscent of Broken Social Scene.”
