With the recent surge of '80s-inspired
culture, bands seem to be adopting synths, drum machines and neon-colored
clothes left and right. In this mass-revival, however, only a select few pull
off the conceit believably. Hockey is one of the few. Lead singer and guitarist
Ben Grubin and bassist Jeremy Reynolds started the band in 2007 in California,
where they met in college.
After moving to Portland, they added percussionist Anthony Stassi and guitarist Brian White to their lineup, solidifying the quartet and their sound. Hockey’s demos received airplay on BBC Radio 1, and led to a signing with Virgin and the release of the group’s debut album, Mind Chaos in 2009. Though their precocious hit “Too Fake” might suggest otherwise, Hockey is truly the real deal.
