Though he
started out as a producer of what All Music Guide cutely terms “groovy
experimental techno,” and gained recognition as half of Super_Collider (with
Cristian Vogel), Jamie Lidell is now better known for his neo-soul stylings and
genre-jumping excursions. His 2008 release, Jim, was lauded for its
resemblance to late-’60s Southern soul as purveyed by fellow Brits like
Jamiroquai and Amy Winehouse. On his Myspace page, Lidell defines his sound as
“Prince serenading Moodyman while Otis Redding and Aphex Twin watch Wattstax”.
He gained a reputation for performing solo, programming parts electronically and singing over them, though he also tours with a band and will be bringing players with him to Lollapalooza, where he’ll no doubt perform tracks from Compass, the album he’ll release May 18 on Warp Records. With any luck, maybe a few of his collaborators will show up. They include Beck, Leslie Feist, Wilco keyboardist Pat Sansone, Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor and Nikka Costa.
