Described early on as “electro-rock synth-pop,” the music of
MGMT duo Ben Goldwasser (vocals, keyboards, synths, drums) and Andrew
VanWyngarden (vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums) segued from mainly prerecorded
and electronically generated sounds to the psychedelic “space-rock” they’re
associated with now. Finding each other in 2002 as students at Wesleyan
University in Middletown, Conn., they released an indie EP, Time to Pretend,
after graduating in 2005. That got them signed to Columbia in 2006. Dave
Fridmann (Mercury Rev, the Flaming Lips) produced their full-length debut, Oracular
Spectacular, released digitally in 2007 (followed by a CD in 2008). NME
named it the top album of 2008; Rolling Stone went one better by calling
it one of the top 100 albums of the decade. Their single, “Kids,” earned them a
2010 Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals;
they also picked up a Best New Artist Grammy nomination. The French electro duo
Justice nabbed a Grammy in 2009 for Best Remixed Recording, Non-classical, for
their remix of MGMT’s “Electric Feel.” All that was on top of opening for Paul
McCartney, collaborating with rapper Kid Cudi and the Flaming Lips, and
contributing to Beck’s Record Club covers compilation, Songs of Leonard
Cohen.
MGMT’s new album, Congratulations, was due April 13, but was prematurely leaked online March 19, causing the band to place streams of each song on its website before the release date. They refused to pluck singles for individual promotion, however, instead encouraging radio programmers to play whatever tracks they liked.

vailahim , about 1 year agohowever much I love MGMT, their live shows are lacking energy, and their music just doesn't translate from CD to live. Considering their popularity, they really should be headlining, they have more people signed up to attend than any other band on the line up.
