Yes, there is a Mumford
in the band—singer/guitarist/drummer Marcus Mumford. But no, bandmates Country
Winston (vocals/banjo/dobro), Ben Lovett (vocals/keyboards) and Ted Dwane
(vocals/bass) are not his sons. What is a band, though, if not family? And
these London-based buddies share a familial philosophy: to make music both they
and their listeners will love. Honest music, the kind that marries pretty
harmonies and great folk/rock/bluegrass/country chops with loads of
personality, as exhibited on “Little Lion Man,” an Avett Brothers-like,
decidedly not radio-friendly track on their first full-length album, Sigh No
More. The album, produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire), debuted in the
U.S. at No. 1 on Billboard’s March 6 Folk Chart.
In Australia, where they’ve taken off, it bumped Susan Boyle out of No. 1 on the top albums chart. As the accolades pile up, they’ve been selling out gigs months in advance both in Europe and the U.S., and have been invited by Ray Davies to join him on his upcoming collaborations album. For a band less than 3 years old, it doesn’t get much better than that.
