The title of their new album, Armistice, has literal meaning for the alternative rockers MUTEMATH; the album wouldn’t exist had they not reached their own armistice after hitting the boiling point one day during their New Orleans recording sessions. But vocalist/keyboardist Paul Meany, guitarist Greg Hill, bassist Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas and drummer Darren King had too much invested in the project to walk away.
They’d already won a battle to prevent their self-titled debut album from being marketed as a Christian rock album. But the Grammy-nominated foursome, described by All Music Guide as a fusion of “New Order's synth-dance epics, the Stone Roses' shambling shuffle, Radiohead's spiky chilliness, Air's serene ambient pop and the booming vocals of mainstream pop/rock,” are now reaping the rewards as they watch their popularity grow.
