Among the biggest buzz-generating names this year is that of Nneka Egbuna, a Nigerian-German soul singer-songwriter with heavy hip-hop influences. Building upon the joyful experience of singing in school and church choirs while growing up in Nigeria, Nneka pursued a more formal singing career after emigrating to Hamburg, Germany, at 19. Working closely with hip-hop producer DJ Farhot, Nneka released her first album, Victim of Truth, in 2006. But it was her 2008 sophomore release, No Longer At Ease, a musical accompaniment to Chinua Achebe’s book of the same name, that drew greater attention to her work. Nneka sings in English and in her native Igbo, and her themes are often political, tackling issues of capitalism, poverty and war. Her first US release, Concrete Jungle, came out in early February, primarily containing material from her first two albums.
