Chris Manak named his DJ/producing persona after a most bizarre fear--in the '80s he had a girlfriend whose little brother was afraid of a "peanut butter wolf monster." As a teenager, PB Wolf worked in a hip-hop duo with close friend Charizma. When Charizma passed away in 1993, PB Wolf retired from the game until Upstairs Records approached him to release an instrumental album, the jazz/hip-hop <i>Peanut Butter Breaks</i>.<br><br>In 1996, PB Wolf started Stones Throw Records, appropriately launched with Charizma's posthumous single "My World Premiere." In recent years, Peanut Butter Wolf has focused on DJing and building his label’s roster, which includes Mayer Hawthorne, Madlib and MF Doom.
