Skybox are Chicagoans Tim Ellis, Christian Fields, Mike Holtz and Sean Brennan. Ellis and Fields go way back—to their births, actually; they were born on one another’s due dates. They’ve played in bands together since their high school days in Kansas City. Fields followed Ellis to Phoenix, and then Chicago. Though the band started out with acoustic-folk leanings, they’ve expanded their sound to incorporate electronic elements, drawing comparisons to MGMT. Skybox released their debut, Arco Iris, in 2006. For its follow-up, this year’s Morning After Cuts, the group brought in producer Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Plain White Ts). Skybox’s breezy, grand pop tunes fit their adoptive home perfectly.
