Australia’s Violent Soho recalls the rugged grunge sounds of the ‘90s to create what vocalist and guitarist Luke Boerdam describes as “stoner pop”. Boerdam met the rest of the foursome: James Tidswell, Luke Henery, and Michael Richards—while in school. They became a band in 2005.
Three years and an EP later, Violent Soho released their first full-length album, 2008’s We Don’t Belong Here, which caught the attention of Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Moore signed Violent Soho to his Ecstatic Peace label, then helped the band rework some tracks from We Don’t Belong Here and create a few new ones. The result: 2010’s Violent Soho, their U.S. debut.
The band’s catchy single, “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend,” has earned some praise, and appeared in the top 40 on both Billboard’s Alternative Songs and Rock Songs charts.
