Question: What do you get when you cross the moody atmospherics of Cat Power with a keen eye for skewering expectations of an all-girl band? Answer: Warpaint. The Los Angeles quartet was recently signed to Rough Trade Records on the strength of their 2009 EP, Exquisite Corpse, and a stunning set at last fall’s CMJ Music Marathon. Combining dreamy ambience with razorblade-sharp lyrics, the foursome —Jenny Lee Lindberg on bass, Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman on guitar, and new addition Stella Mozgawa on drums—trade off vocal duties, which adds dimension and textures to the group’s already rich sound. Exquisite Corpse reveals the band’s propensity for fiddling about: “Elephants” adds a layer of brain-piercing, fizzy buzz on top of the vocals, while “Billie Holiday” finds Mary Wells’ Motown classic, “My Guy,” working its way into the bridge, putting a twist on the trope of the ever-faithful girlfriend.
