X Japan’s Yoshiki on Composing for The Golden Globe Awards

The X Japan drummer/songwriter and globally renowned artist was tapped to compose this year’s Golden Globes theme song. Kenny Herzog spoke to Yoshiki about the honor, why he's excited for a Ricky Gervais teasing, and where plans for X’s next record fit into all this.

January 11, 2012
Like Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy, Yoshiki is kind of a big deal. It was only a matter of time until Hollywood summoned the X Japan maestro and multi-instrumentalist for something loftier than writing music for the Saw franchise (though X’s “I.V.” was arguably Saw IV’s shining moment). Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) President Dr. Aida Takia-O’Reilly—herself a native Egyptian—reached out to Yoshiki shortly after being instated in 2011. She’d hoped he would compose this year’s Golden Globes theme song and help send a message of global inclusion to the ceremony’s audience.
Naturally, Yoshiki embraced the opportunity as both a privilege and creative challenge, and a chance to continue pursuing his quest to make music that affects people from ocean to ocean. Not that it was easy. (Wrangling musicians and engineers during the holidays can be a logistical nightmare.) But as he explains below in his latest interview with Kenny Herzog (who spoke to the philanthropic hard-rock icon just after last summer’s tragic earthquake in Japan), Yoshiki is confident he delivered a song that’s fittingly grand but will make his worldwide fans no less X-static.
You just turned the Golden Globes theme into the HFPA this week. For all your and X Japan’s fans, how would you describe what they can expect?
You can hear a Yoshiki melody in it, then also there’s an element of classical music and an element of rock. I combined those together.
Did you consult songs from years past or just do your own thing?
I watched some DVDs of several years of the Golden Globes. Also, I was there last year, so I know what kind of vibe [they need].
Also, the president of HFPA gave me some keywords, like it needs to be Hollywood, needs to be prestigious, needs to be edgy.
So I listened to all those words carefully, digested in my head and then composed the song.
Is it a song you feel kicks ass beyond that grandeur and prestige?
I’ve never really done this kind of instrumental piece with an orchestra and a band together.
When I composed for the Japanese emperor, it was kind of a concerto. When I composed for the World Expo [in 2005], it had pop vibes too, but kind of a classical base.
This is a little more rock ‘n’ roll, but with classical in it. I’m proud of this song. It’s a totally addictive melody. I wanted to come up with something very catchy and still have some kind of depth.

Your creative process was immediately impacted after last year’s earthquake in Japan. Did any of the emotion from that find its way into the Globes song?
I think that kind of thing is still in me. It’s always in me, so no matter what song I write. I don’t think I can write a 100 percent happy song. I wouldn’t call it sadness, but something’s in it always. That element is always in me and then every single song I write.
Is this collaboration with the Globes the start of a possible next path for you after it becomes physically impractical to tour with X?
[Laughs] I don’t know, we’ll see. When I got this call, I was pretty surprised. But when I was writing the song, I kind of understood why I was asked to do it, because I have both backgrounds—classical and rock. At the same time, I don’t believe in shortcuts.
You have to work hard to get there, so I’m really lucky to be able to do this kind of job, but going to the next step, I just have to keep working hard… The next thing after this is just complete the X Japan album.
I’ve been asked to be music director for a certain film. I can’t say the name, but I kept saying, “I need to finish X Japan album, can I do it after?” But [the Globes] is the only one [where] I said, “I would love to do this.” But I will do the X Japan album right after.
Was writing and composing the Globes theme a process you actually enjoyed?
I loved the process and everything. It was just kind of challenging. Not the composition; the hardest part was I just finished a world tour and had to do a few appearances, so I had to compose this song during the holidays. This song has drums, bass and guitar, a big orchestra and also piano. I played everything except orchestra, but it’s hard to get all those people Christmas season or New Year’s. Also, those engineers and all that staff.
Also, [I had to] try to win over this pressure. There are so many big names in Hollywood, so I didn’t want to disappoint all these people who gave me this opportunity. I had confidence at the same time [that] I’m gonna create a great song, something only I can do.
Are you worried that Ricky Gervais will tease you or the song at all during his opening monologue?
It’s gonna be an honor to even get mentioned. [Laughs] I was there last year, and as I was eating and drinking, I had to ask my friend, “Did he just say that? Is he allowed to say it?” Towards the end of the show I started laughing. So, if he even mentioned one word, good or bad, I’d be honored.

He’s one of the Far East's biggest rock stars, and on Sunday’s Golden Globes (NBC), Yoshiki, frontman for X Japan, will take on a behind-the-scenes role as composer of the show’s new theme song.

Working out of sound studios in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Yoshiki gathered a 35-piece orchestra along with a slew of engineers and technicians for a month of recording. “It was the holiday season, so it took longer and was a little harder to gather all those people,” he says. That may explain why Yoshiki ended up playing so many instruments himself. “I played everything -- drums, bass, guitar, and piano.”
His time commitment to working on the Globes theme also ended up sidetracking X Japan's long-anticipated English-language album. Says Yoshiki: “It’s 90 percent done. Several things happened -- we just finished the world tour in mid-November and then the Golden Globes opportunity came up and I had to do it. It will be released in 2012 for sure.”

Until then, fans can look forward to seeing Yoshiki in the flesh as a Golden Globes attendee. Which movie is he rooting for? “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was very, very interesting,” he says. “I think the music in the movie was excellent. I was there last year at the Golden Globes when [Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross] were nominated for The Social Network. It was great that they won.”

X JAPAN IN PERU SHIMPO!
"The newspaper of the Nikkei Japanese colony in our country and called" Peru Shimpo "had an extensive interview with Esther Espino, CEO of Wave Japan Peru producer facing the concert next September 16, the greatest band of all Asia: X Japan.
Here transcribe the interview for you all:
Japan Esther Espino Wave Peru
"With X Japan concert Peru experienced a high art"
X Japan, one of the most important and iconic bands from Japan will arrive in our country to offer a single presentation on Friday 16 September. This is an unprecedented event for lovers of rock Nippon. In that sense we talked with Esther Espino Hinojosa, a member of Japan Wave Peru, a company that brings our country to X Japan as part of his South American tour.
How to open the Japanese market for artists?
Japan Wave Peru is the producer under my leadership. Was formed between 2008 and 2009. What began as a group of fans who organize events, projections and that sort of thing. Then we had the opportunity to produce the concert of the first band to play in Peru that was Versailles, whose concert was last year, managing to satisfy the expectations of the Peruvian public that was eager to see artists of this kind of transcendence arrived in Lima and play live. And is that since 2007 they lived in South America and the boom of Asian gangs, taking major markets such as Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Peru now.
Then we had the opportunity to make last month the Japan Super Live, with the participation of four artists: MOVE, Kaya and two anime singers: Tanimoto Takayoshi Yamada Nobou. And now we were given the opportunity to bring this band is X Japan, which want the Peruvian public can experience a concert of high art.
Was it difficult to bring X Japan?
To do this we have been working for a year, most fans do not have much knowledge of how to concert production. In the case of X Japan, with Noix Producciones Chile and Brazil Yamato have worked together to bring the band to Peru.
Last year a representative of the producer was the United States for the X Japan concert, carrying a flag of Peru. I remember that three or four days, released a interview with Yoshiki released where they were interested in South American tour, which led us to work harder to prepare for the concert.
This band is very high and a long path, then surely be a success.
Yes, it is the first visit to Peru a band of this level and also South America, is a band with 30 years of experience and generations together, because not only people over 30 years know, but those in 20 and also teenagers. It's a totally avant-garde band legendary in the history of music in Japan and Asia.
They are known worldwide, including last year were at Lollapalooza with artists such as Lady Gaga, Green Day, Social Destortion, Soundgarden, among others. This is a band that transcended the borders of Asia, including their latest album "Jade", is completely in English, because it is focused on the U.S. market that is waiting with incredible cravings.
Tell us about the event.
They are used to playing large venues, therefore they are well known in Japan, for example, they could easily play at the Budokan is one of the most representative and largest music in Japan, have played in Tokyo Dome indoor stadium which is the largest in the world 18 times. But for the European and South American tour have decided to change the format to something more intimate, not have the feature that shows in Japan where they are presented to 20 000 or 30 000 people. Here in America the concerts will be between a thousand and 5 thousand people, varying according to the country. We expect nothing less than a thousand people for this concert.
They will play all songs in musical history. Then the concert will be from metal, rock, ballads and acoustic. This band is huge and its creative power is great.
YX ¿Japan has many fans here in Peru?
Many, however, comes the fact that the band and the concert stage Peru is of this type do not imply that it is difficult to publicize these events, because this is like an underworld, underground music, but we hope that all Nikkei people go to the concert.
But not all fans are Nikkei.
So, there is much of what is moved and Jmusic Jpop, for example this Arenales Mall exploiting of people who follow this move.
What do they expect the concert?
E mpezará at 9:00 PM and last until about 11:00 PM, but if the public is encouraged might be extended. We want the public to show all its heat, as they did to Versailles, were saying that even though Peru was the smallest hall in South America, was the best for the warmth of the people, by the closeness that existed, that loved it.
Yoshiki ¿or any member referred to the concert in Peru?
They talked about what is South America, they have high expectations, because reference other musicians know that this is different from what is seen in Europe, America or Japan. Because human warmth here is very different.
What few weeks before the arrival of the group that they say to the fans?
Invite all because this is a concert that is going to open doors for many other groups, we have plenty of options, but depends on the recognition that we give to X Japan, because Peru is not going to be an attractive place if they were not received as they deserve. So now the ball is in court of the fans.

Fans have been waiting outside the Caupolicán Tuesday to see X Japan
It is the first time the Japanese group comes to the country and the row with his followers and reaches the corner of the theater that will play tonight at 21 hours.
Although there are more than twelve hours to come up on stage at 8:35 in the morning and more than 150 followers of the Japanese group X Japan on the edge of Caupolican Theatre. Moreover, eight of them have almost 65 hours queuing that they think will ensure a front row in an event which according to the producer from Bizarro, has already sold four thousand tickets available.
It is the first time the Nippon rock quintet arrive in the country and the desire to get as close to the stage took the cousins Luis (23) and Manuel Cabrales (19), plus six friends, to arrive on Tuesday at 17 hours. According to Luis mind, each concerned to bring a sleeping bag and almost four days of waiting have been organizing to go to buy food and also to assert their place in line.
That's why each person has a number on his hand, so there is no confusion. It is not the first time Luis and Manuel waiting for days before a concert. In fact, Manuel waited a similar time before the show Vamps in this same place last year and Luis did for the recital at Teatro Novedades Mucc in 2009. Cony Diaz (20) is a novice in this marathon of waiting and says, "When we ask (how long have we been here) we realize that we're crazy."
This group of friends, and people began to arrive on Wednesday morning, has put aside his work and studies to be here. But while not everyone wants to leave on the picture to avoid problems with bosses or teachers, for them it's worth the wait.
Manuel is not afraid that the minutes be exhausted when we finally start the concert: "With the excitement, when they start playing you forget the hunger and exhaustion." For his part, Luis explains why so many expectations: "We never thought would come, X Japan is a group with 30 years experience and are expected," he says, adding convinced: "If they come again, I do this again. I would do it as often as necessary. "
Rock n`vivo - Santiago de Chile / 27th July / Yoshiki Hayashi: el heavy metal japonés no es distinto al resto
http://rocknvivo.com/2011/07/27/yoshiki-hayashi-el-heavy-metal-japones-no-es-distinto-al-del-resto-del-mundo/
Yoshiki Hayashi: Japanese heavy metal is no different to the rest
X Japan is without a doubt one of the most important bands and popular Japanese rock and heavy metal. A true musical institution was born in 1982 in Chiba Prefecture, signed by Deyama Toshi (vocals) and Yoshiki Hayashi (drums / keyboards).
Characterized by the mixture of pure heavy metal and fast with softer ballads, the strong influence of classical music elements and progressive aesthetics, X Japan achieved recognition with their second album Blue Blood (1989). In 1997, the band broke up after the departure of Toshi. In 2007, the group returned with plans to record a new album and touring the world.
X Japan will be presented for the first time in Chile on September 9, a concert that has sparked great interest in their fans. Yoshiki Hayashi, creative mind behind X Japan, spoke with RockNvivo from his studio in Los Angeles, where the same record his acclaimed Metallica Black album.
- The music of X Japan is very special since it mixes heavy metal and classical music to softer ballads How was this mixture of sounds? Yoshiki Hayashi: Well, I do not know, just trying to compose and play anything we like.
For me, musically, I first started playing piano at an early age, then the battery, at 10 years. Then we all liked the heavier material, so we combine all these elements in a sound and I think this was born the sound of X Japan. It was natural.
Blue Blood, his second album, which was launched to worldwide fame. What does this work for the band?
YH: That was our most successful album. We did not know that rock could be so big in Japan, at that time (late '80s), the music scene was very pop-oriented, including Sony Records told us that we did not expect that the impact was so "great" and, Well, we sold a lot!
You are considered an icon of Japanese rock, being an outstanding composer, musician and producer. Is there something you miss to be done in your music career?
YH I am now immersed in producing soundtracks. I compose music for films like maybe ... but most important is still creating songs to touch the hearts of fans.
In Chile, X Japan was known mainly for songs composed for Japanese animation, such as "X" (Clamp, 1996). Do you think this has helped them be more popular outside of Japan?
YH: Actually I think so. I love the animations. Precisely, we have just finished a song fornew Japanese animation. We love doing this, and I think some of the reasons why the music of X Japan has become popular outside of Japan is precisely this.
Is the Japanese heavy metal than the rest of the world?
YH: Hmm ... well, the only difference is that many of the bands rock and heavy metal sung in Japanese, otherwise I do not think is so different. But at the same time, Japan X has elements of heavy metal and also a softer side. I do think that the music of X Japan can be a little different. Besides, I play drums in a subject, and the next the piano!
What can you forward on your next album? Recently launched the new single "Jade" and signed a contract with EMI for 3 years.
YH: We intend to finish the new album as soon as possible. 90% of the new album will be sung in English and Japanese letters intentionally leave and 50% comes from our old songs and half are new compositions. The contract was recently signed with EMI in North America with the distribution. Been a while since our last album!
This will be his first time in Chile. What do they expect the concert? What South American public know?
YH: I have received many messages from South America, through means such as Facebook. To my knowledge, are very passionate. I think we have a fantastic concert. I am excited to see them, the entire South American public! We will play our old favorites newer songs will be a combination, will be a heavy show!

X JAPAN... We Are X!
They had long expected the Japanese fans. Not only were the huge number of years waiting for the band came to South America, and therefore our country, but also the delay in the first show the band would Caupolicán Theatre. But by then, and did not care. We all were inside the compound, waiting, perhaps, one of the most important bands of all time Metal.
X Japan, Japanese, as is what its name alludes, with 29 years experience and a history marked by strong emotions, not just by the way they feel the music, but also for having suffered the loss of one of its members, Hide. "We had to wait forever to be here, even with Hide," he told the packed Caupolicán Yoshiki, who never tires of ovasionarlos. One of the most anticipated shows, and the band knew how to respond, graduating with one of the longer shows that he had been on the campus of San Diego: 2:20 hrs. "Missing topics" were the comments could be heard outside the Caupolicán, without doubt, the joy, excitement, and feeling of a dream come true were inevitable. Even despite the delay made the band, 35 minutes, it did not matter to the faithful fans, who slept outside the theater, and others who traveled just to see the band from Colombia, Japan and even Taiwan.
The show featured everything. From the big hits, like "Kurenai" or "X" to even new songs, like "Jade". Surprisingly the ability to stretch each song, reveling in melodic interludes that did nothing but cause the euphoria of the fans, to see their idols showing off to each instrument. "We love you Chile" or "We Are X" were the phrases that tirelessly repeated Yoshiki, leader of the band, who never hid his excitement and sense of gratitude I felt, for the Chilean public, like Toshi, who a little more timid, only expressed shouting "We love you James." In perhaps the only time we could hear Yoshiki talk without being interrupted by shouts from fans, talked about how much they liked Chile, who had never thought that would finally here, and that "took tons of wine "the night before the show. Surely a show to remember, and definitely makes the wait for the next visit of the band, where insurance, Chile will continue to shout "We Are X "!!!.

MTV IGGY X Japan’s Yoshiki on Composing for The Golden Globe Awards Yoshiki plays drums at an X Japan concert in Seoul, Korea, 2011. Photo: Getty"I’m Proud of This Song. It’s a Totally Addictive Melody" The X Japan drummer/songwriter and globally renowned artist was tapped to compose this year’s Golden Globes theme song. Kenny Herzog spoke to Yoshiki about the honor, why he's excited for a Ricky Gervais teasing, and where plans for X’s next record fit into all this. 96By Kenny Herzog January 11, 2012 Like Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy, Yoshiki is kind of a big deal. Yoshiki of X Japan performs in Seoul, Korea, 2011. Photo: Getty Your creative process was immediately impacted after last year’s earthquake in Japan.

YOSHIKI: This song is catchy but there is a beautiful song. Does it become a habit melody, I think memorable. Chairman O'Reilly: That's right. If you listen twice, in the head from another離Remasen, really, really like. Chairman O'Reilly: I long ago might also be a famous singer sing a song at the beginning of the ceremony. It was just the song of the movie was nominated, it was a different song each time. Official theme song like this so I think the first time. The songs from the Golden Globes prove as soon as hear songs will be used frequently. We'll use within a variety of scenes, songs will be a brand that symbolizes the Golden Globe. Vice President Aderuman: When you first heard the theme music was very excited. Is packed with many elements had sought since. You have captured the elegance of Hollywood, and that is reflected in the impressive and yet very good at the Golden Globe's very YOSHIKI. Thus a rock musician, probably because there is an edge. For example glimpse of such double talent is very high quality finished work. YOSHIKI: You are very enjoy the process. taeliveforever , 3 months agoJapan Wave Peru / 27th Aug 2011 / ¡X JAPAN EN PERÚ SHIMPO! http://www.japanwaveperu.com/jwp/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=106:%C2%A1x-japan-en-per%C3%BA-shimpo&Itemid=106 X JAPAN IN PERU SHIMPO! "The newspaper of the Nikkei Japanese colony in our country and called" Peru Shimpo "had an extensive interview with Esther Espino, CEO of Wave Japan Peru producer facing the concert next September 16, the greatest band of all Asia: X Japan. Here transcribe the interview for you all: Japan Esther Espino Wave Peru "With X Japan concert Peru experienced a high art" X Japan, one of the most important and iconic bands from Japan will arrive in our country to offer a single presentation on Friday 16 September. Interview: Alejandro Yoshioka - Peru Shimpo

It is not the first time Luis and Manuel waiting for days before a concert. taeliveforever , 4 months agoRock n`vivo - Santiago de Chile / 27th July / Yoshiki Hayashi: el heavy metal japonés no es distinto al resto http://rocknvivo.com/2011/07/27/yoshiki-hayashi-el-heavy-metal-japones-no-es-distinto-al-del-resto-del-mundo/ Yoshiki Hayashi: Japanese heavy metal is no different to the rest X Japan is without a doubt one of the most important bands and popular Japanese rock and heavy metal. We will play our old favorites newer songs will be a combination, will be a heavy show!
taeliveforever , 4 months agoAGENDA MUSICAL.CL / 23th Sep 2011 / X JAPAN...We Are X! / http://www.agendamusical.cl/x-japan-review#content-top X JAPAN...
